Louise MEUWISSEN

"I want to learn more and more to see as beautiful what is necessary in things; then I shall be one of those who make things beautiful." - Friedrich Nietzsche

Through the exploration and identification of the similarities that occur in aesthetic form across micro and macro phenomena, Louise Meuwissen attempts to map out the curiosities of the universe; to highlight and celebrate the sublime to be found within the banal. In her intuitively based practice the act of making itself gains a level of primacy representing a kind of anti-progress or alternate growth, an antidote to notions of instant gratification.
In an investigation into the reinvention of 'the Naturalist' through the lens of feminism and environmental sustainability, Meuwissen creates lush, immersive works that seek to draw us viscerally and emotionally nearer to Nature. Working across an array of media including painting, sculpture, installation, and embroidery Meuwissen creates striking abstracted imagery - reminiscent of fungus, eggs, decay, and bacteria; simultaneously being evocative of topographical and cosmic terrains -  which focus upon the intricacies and inherent beauty present in the organic, rekindling feelings of interconectedness and wonderment.
